100 years since Montessori training was established in the UK, the degree marks a new Montessori milestone.
Montessori Centre International (MCI), the specialist independent higher education provider of Montessori teacher training, announces that it has been approved to deliver a full three-year BA (Hons) degree in Montessori Early Childhood Practice, from September 2019.
This is the first-time students will be able to study for a full BA (Hons) Degree taught entirely within a Montessori specialist training college. The move is to meet the increasing national and international demand for highly qualified early childhood specialists and Montessori graduate leaders. Outside the UK, only the US and Taiwan currently offer Montessori Bachelor or Masters Degrees. MCI Diploma graduates can fast track into the second year of the degree. The degree is awarded by London Metropolitan University who have been working in collaboration with MCI for 10 years.
Originally named the Montessori St Nicholas Training Centre and opened by Maria Montessori on her last visit to London in 1946, Montessori Centre International is renowned for its high-quality Montessori teacher training. On being approved to offer the degree, Director of Learning, Penny Johns says:
“This achievement is testament to the outstanding quality of teacher training at MCI. It demonstrates the full confidence shown in our ability to maintain academic standards and a quality experience for students. Montessori has always had that global-first outlook and we find MCI undergraduates come to study with us from around the world, developing their learning and then delivering Montessori best practice across the world”
Over 4,000 UK and International students have completed their training with MCI over the past 20 years . Maria Montessori was one of the most influential educators of the twentieth century who has had a profound influence on the education of young children; 2019 marks one hundred years since she delivered the first Montessori teacher training course in London.
Reflecting on MCI’s achievement, Penny Johns adds:
“Being able to deliver a degree in MCI’s specialist training centre is a big step forwards in providing Montessori leaders who can really make a difference to the provision of high-quality and inspirational Montessori education. Our aim is to develop reflective practitioners who are forward thinking, responsive and ready to engage in contemporary early years discourse, bringing Montessori practice to a wider audience.”
The three-year BA (Hons) in Montessori Early Childhood Practice provides an in-depth study of Montessori, with theory applied to practice during professional placements in MCI approved Montessori early years settings. Undergraduates will engage in the latest contemporary early childhood thinking and research, as well as being taught vital 21st century skills including reflective practice and action research. Consultancy has been provided by Cass Centre for Charity Effectiveness in developing a new leadership module.
Students can choose from a range of flexible study pathways, including full time, part time and online. All students benefit from MCI’s pioneering approach to digital education which provides a vibrant, collaborative online space alongside classroom study in MCI’s newly opened College in St John’s Wood.
