“This is the sort of training EVERY parent should get!”
Dad says Montessori has helped whole family.
James Robertshaw was a bus driver when he realised he was going the wrong way. Fortunately for his passengers it wasn’t whilst he was on his daily route, but when he was thinking about his career. “I’d had a job in sales but the drudgery of filling in reports and chasing targets no longer inspired me. Quite the opposite, in fact,” says James. “I’d also tried my hand at volunteering as a Special Constable for the Metropolitan Police force, but I just knew that it wasn’t the right path for me. I wanted a job where I knew I could really make a difference.”
“I decided that if I was really going to have a positive impact then, for me, working with children was going to be much more satisfying than working with adults,” says James. “So my decision was made and I looked to education for my new career.”
However just as James thought his decision was made, his journey took another unexpected path. “My first instinct was to start studying for my PGCE, but then got chatting to a friend who ran a Montessori nursery school. Speaking to her really sparked my interest and I started my own research into exactly what Montessori was and something just ‘clicked’ for me,” says James.
“Any Dad will tell you that watching their own children develop, particularly through their early years, is inspiring. But even more so when you’re then considering going into an industry which is responsible for helping children get the best start in life! The whole Montessori approach of child-driven learning, enabling them to progress at their own rate, and the whole philosophy behind it, was something which strongly resonated with me.”
James started his training with Montessori Centre International in 2013, and graduated in 2016 after studying for the Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy.
“One of the things which really attracted me to the Montessori approach was that it reflected the way I’d parented my own children. But then as I worked my way through the training it massively broadened my understanding of how children learn, and how I could best help my own kids. I had a massive realisation that the more work you put in, the more they benefit – and that goes as a professional working with children and as a parent!” says James.
James is currently using his Montessori skills working as a Special Needs Teaching Assistant in a mainstream primary school, but has he reached the final destination of his ideal job?
“I’m definitely getting closer!” says James. “My Montessori training has helped me to look at the whole education system with new eyes which is benefitting the children I care for at work, as well as my own children at home.”
“But regardless of whether or not you’re looking for a new career path, I’d recommend any parent to investigate the amazing benefits that Montessori could bring into the life of their kids,” says James. “Montessori is the way to go – you don’t need any more directions!”
