Literacy and Numeracy qualifications for Early Years Educators

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the requirements for staff:child ratios in settings delivering the EYFS and the qualification levels that practitioners must hold. These requirements were revised in April 2017.   You will need to hold a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths from the list available on the DfE website . To see what can be accepted as an equivalent click here

Note that this is not a requirement forentry to study on the MCI Early Years Educator qualification, but it will be a requirement for entry to employment to be counted on the ratios to work with children in an early years setting in England.

“I already hold a valid qualification that gives me licence to practice (be counted on the ratios) to work with young children. Do I still need to meet the Maths and English requirements?”

If you already hold a full and relevant Early Years qualification (e.g. CACHE Level 3 Childcare) that was started before September 2014 this doesn’t apply to you.

English Language

If English is not your first language we need to assess that you will be able to meet the requirements of the course in reading, speaking, listening and writing. IELTS is the most widely accepted English Language testing system and you will need a score of 6.5 across all four components. For further information, including when and where you can take the test, click here.

International Students

If you intend to study within the UK and are not a UK/EU citizen you will need a full and relevant visa for the duration of your studies.

Please note we do not have Tier 4 status and are not able to issue student visas for study in the UK.

Criminal Convictions Check

You will need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check, as the course includes a work placement with children. International students will need to comply with the relevant legal requirements within their country.
