State Primary Montessori

Introduction

In 2004 the Montessori St Nicholas Charity was approached by Gorton Mount Primary School in Manchester to embark on a jointly funded experiment introducing Montessori into a much challenged state school environment.

After a year of planning the Charity and then DfES jointly invested £80,000. A research project followed the first few terms and concluded that there were grounds for considerable optimism that the Montessori approach could indeed make a substantial difference. Since that time results at Gorton Mount have continued to improve and the success is attributed by the school to Montessori.

In 2007 the Montessori St Nicholas trustees committed to expanding their role in the SSPs (State School Projects) hoping to attract 3 to 4 new schools each year over the next 3 years.

"Montessori was introduced in 2005 to our nursery and reception class. As a way of teaching instinctively i know it is right. The children are much more skilled than they were before. Our results have gone up and the best thing for me is that they have improved the socialised behaviour.

It has also had a profound effect on the teaching staff. They have been given a whole new lease of life as teachers. They have rethought their approach to children and become better, more rounded teachers because of it.

Montessori started out in an area not unlike Gorton. It's come home to its origins. We're giving it for free - it's a child's entitlement to have the best education they can."

Issue 93, 2009 of Montessori International features the article, 'Gorton five years on' by Barbara Isaacs and Kat Price which reflects on the achievements of introducing the Montessori approach to Gorton Mount. Click here to download the article.

Currently, there are 4 Montessori state primary school projects running at Foundation stage with plans to establish Montessori further up the school years.

Read personal accounts by the head teachers describing their reasons for introducing Montessori and the impact the project has had on their schools.
