Montessori documentary to be shown on Teachers TV

21 Apr 2010

The Montessori Method now a hugely successful global phenomenon, still divides the education world. While most Montessorians are evangelical about the effectiveness of the method, some educators see it as mystical or outdated and only for a priviledged few. But these associations could not be futher from the vision of Maria Montessori.

The film entitled 'Professional Knowledge: The Montessori Method'to be shown on the 17 May aims to dispel some of the myths that surround Montessori. It will look at the humanitarian and scientific vision that underpins the Montessori approach and at the method in action today.   In the Montessori philosophy, viewers will gain an insight into the history of the Montessori approach, through a mixture of archive footage, forensic observational classroom footage and a small number of key interviews. In the UK, Phyllis Wallbank, a friend of Dr Montessori is interviewed who at 91 still lectures around the world on Montessori and current brain research.

Viewers will also meet Barbara Isaacs who'll discuss in particular how the Montessori St Nicholas Charity is now going back to it's roots with hopes to build a state school.
