and 9.30pm. The programme will also release online via the following link: www.teachers.tv/videos/53681
The film examines the roots and philosophy behind the Montessori approach to education and aims to dispel some of the myths that surround Montessori. Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952) was in modern terms a visionary. She dedicated herself to understanding how and why children learn.
The film gives viewers an insight into the history of the Montessori approach to education, through a mixture of archive, forensic observational classroom footage and a small number of key interviews. It takes a look at the extraordinary life of Maria Montessori.
The journey begins in the slums of Rome where Maria Montessori began her forensic study of children learning.
The Montessori Method, now a hugely successful global phenomenon, still deeply divides the education world. Montessorians are evangelical about the effectiveness of the method but some educators still see it as mystical or outdated - and only for the privileged few.
But these privileged associations couldn’t be further from the vision of its founder Maria Montessori. Her philosophy grew from her work with underprivileged children. Today the Montessori Method operates in some of the poorest and most challenging areas of the world.
The film examines the humanitarian and scientific vision underpinning the Montessori approach. It also considers Montessori in action in a state primary school in one of the most deprived areas of Manchester, Gorton Mount.
It examines how Gorton combines the Montessori method with its own working practice
It also contains an interview with Barbara Isaacs, Academic Director of Montessori Centre International, Europe’s largest teacher training college.
Through this mixture of archive footage, compelling forensic observational documentary and searching interview, we come to understand the basis of Montessori theory: the role and attitude of the Montessori teacher; the preparation of a Montessori environment, and how the method aims to develop each child’s potential based on the essential concept of a Montessori education as 'an aid to life'.
