Montessori is a well-known but little understood approach to early education. So, this month The Montessori Schools Association publishes and distributes ‘Reach’, an introduction to the Montessori Movement.

“When I say the word, Montessori, I’m frequently misunderstood”, says Philip Bujak, Montessori Schools Association CEO. “A common mishearing is ‘multi-storey’. People think I work for National Car Parks…”

As the 2007 centenary of Maria Montessori’s method approaches, the UK’s Montessori Schools Association has released ‘Reach’. It explains clearly what the Montessori approach involves and the benefits it brings, how to become a Montessori teacher and how to find a Montessori school for your child.

It also introduces phonics, the approach to teaching reading and writing that focuses on the sounds of letters and syllables which has been used in Montessori classrooms for 100 years and which is now being adopted throughout ‘mainstream’ education.

“This is an important time for Montessori to be understood,” says Philip Bujak. “There are now more than 700 Montessori Schools in Britain and for the first time since the 1930s Montessori teaching is being adopted in state schools.”

The first government backed project of its kind is already underway in a Manchester primary school and its findings will be available very soon.

15,000 copies of ‘Reach’ have been printed and are available from the Montessori St Nicholas Charity, tel 020 7584 9987, email centre@montessori.org.uk. Your copy is attached with this press release.
