As a Holistic Medical Nutritionist and Mother of four daughters I understand the importance of diet for young children.
There is much banded about as to what children and adults should and should not include in their diet. Much of this information is accurate; however, sadly much of it is misinformation.
Everybody is unique and though many recommendations apply to a broad spectrum, the importance of what is right for the individual is often forgotten.
Food in the early years of life can have a huge effect upon the behaviour, growth, health and intelligence of the child but also upon the teenager and finally the adult. By this I mean that though no obvious problems may exist whilst the child is young, the cumulative effect of the wrong foods may have long term detrimental repercussions.
Children may often appear to have no notable health issues, teenagers may seem to be flourishing and adults may come across as healthy individuals. Are they though if your child, for example, suffers from eczema, toddler tum, reoccurring tonsillitis or ear infections? The food they are eating may well be part of the problem. Diet can often be the reason why teenagers are ‘hormonal’ or constantly tired, suffering headaches etc. When we move into adulthood problems such as IBS, migraines, skin disorders and fertility issues can be addressed by changing the way one eats.
As a Holistic Medical Nutritionist I look at these and many other problems/conditions and treat the cause of the cause, rather than just suppressing a symptom. An example would be a headache – you take an aspirin – the headache can no longer be felt – but it’s still there, the symptom has been masked, however, the cause has not been addressed.
