Foundation Certificate

The Foundation Certificate course is designed to develop a high level of competence in students wishing to become assistants in Montessori classrooms assisting teachers working with children from two and a half to five years of age.

The course provides an introduction to the principles of Montessori Philosophy and classroom practice and focuses on the use of Montessori learning materials across the Montessori Early Years Curriculum.

The syllabus is made up of theoretical subjects and curriculum subjects.

Theoretical subjects comprise: Introduction to Montessori Philosophy and classroom practice

Curriculum subjects comprise: Use of materials in the areas of Practical Life; Education of the Senses; Literary skills; Mathematics; Cultural Subjects; Art and Craft; Music and Movement; Drama.

The Certificate is awarded to students who have successfully completed all their course work and passed the short paper written examination and practical examination focusing on the use of the Montessori materials.

Please refer to the individual overseas Centre, the list can be found below.  The course fee includes the course materials published by Montessori Centre International. an examination fee is payable by all students who qualify for examinations.

Graduates of the Foundation Certificate course have the opportunity to continue their Montessori training with MCI by taking the Early Childhood Course which leads to the International Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy and covers working with children from two and a half to six years of age.

Graduates of the Foundation Certificate who wish to proceed onto the Early Childhood Diploma course must do so within eighteen months of completing the Foundation Certificate and are required to submit a 1750 word essay relating to aspects of Montessori Philosophy.  This essay is set annually by Montessori Centre International and marked by the Centre prior to entry to the course.  Students will be required to attend the whole of the Early Childhood course but at a reduced fee (as published at the time of application for the Early Childhood course).  The completed coursework in the areas of Practical Life and Sensorial education will be credited towards the coursework relevant to the Early Childhood course.
