About the Montessori St Nicholas Charity

The development of Montessori education in the UK during the first half of the 20th century was characterised by confusion and discord. Dr Montessori visited regularly to give lectures and present training diplomas and also strongly supported Margaret Homfray and Phoebe Child who ran their own training college in London. Margaret and Phoebe then set up The St. Nicholas training college as an educational charity providing Montessori education in 1954 with its home at Prince's Gate. One of the key differences between St. Nicholas and AMI linked colleges is that we were willing to offer correspondence courses from 1952 - and still do.

Between 1952 and the late 1990's the St. Nicholas Training College at Prince's Gate was enormously successful in training thousands of students as Montessori teachers and the houses at 23 and 24 Prince's Gate were a hub of activity and achievement. Across the UK and the world today there are St. Nick's trained Montessorians.

As a charity, St. Nicholas needed to have a board of trustees and over the years the charity has been well served by a number of talented and committed volunteers in this capacity - equally the college had the benefit of some outstanding people as Principles of the College - including Bridget Birts - in whose name the Birts Scholarship was founded.

The next dramatic change came in 1998 when the then trustees formed a joint venture partnership with Asquith Court Schools which involved setting up our own St. Nicholas Preparatory School on the first three floors of the Prince's Gate buildings and transferring the training aspect to new premises at Balderton Street also in London. The new training college was named MCI - Montessori Centre International and the school and MCI opened in 1999.

The St. Nicholas Charity continued to work from 24 Prince's gate as it had done since 1954.

The charity today works to support Montessori across the UK in every way it can. The mission statement of The Montessori St. Nicholas Charity is to :

  • Facilitate the unification of the Montessori movement across the UK

  • Make awards and finance initiatives that support the development of Montessori education in the fields of training grants for individuals , equipment and advice.

  • Fund research and development into the value and effectiveness of Montessori education.

The charity draws its funds from a range of sources which include the joint venture company, investments and entrepreneurial activity. Annually the charity spends in excess of £150,000 in various ways to support the Montessori movement in the UK.
